Reishi, Nature’s Xanax

Reishi, nature's gift for us humans to chill out.

Think of reishi (Essence of Zen)  as nature’s Xanax. Everyone is raving about Reishi for its calming and grounding properties — all of which are thanks to the compound triterpene, which reishi has a great deal of. These mood-boosting compounds may alleviate anxiety, ease depression, and encourage better sleep, as researched by science.

Reishi mushroom, aka Ganoderma lucidum, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years and is venerated as the mushroom of immortality. In China, it is called lingzhi, which represents a combination of spiritual potency and essence of immortality, and is regarded as the  “herb of  spiritual potency,”  symbolizing success,  well-being,  divine power,  and longevity.

Reishi is being increasingly used across the world to assist with general health and wellness. As many as 279 bioactive compounds have been isolated from reishi as of 2015. Reishi is currently an important source in the pharmaceutical industry and is one of the most promising projects in the world of food and medicine, which is being highlighted these days.

Impressed? Well, there is more!

An important effect of this mushroom is boosting your immune system through its effects on white blood cells, which help fight infection and cancer. Other potential advantages include reduced fatigue and improved quality of life.

Let's get nerdy.

One study examined its effects in 132 people with neurasthenia, a poorly defined condition associated with aches, pains, dizziness, headaches and irritability. The researchers found that fatigue was reduced and well-being was improved after 8 weeks of taking the supplements. Another study found that fatigue was reduced and quality of life was improved after 4 weeks of taking reishi in a group of 48 breast cancer survivors.

What’s more, the people in the study also experienced less anxiety and depression.

The most important compounds of Reishi extract are triterpenoids and polysaccharides. Triterpenoids improve the use of oxygen and vital functioning of organs. They have been reported to posses hepatoprotective, anti-hypertensive, hypocholesterolemic and anti-histaminic effects, and anti-tumour activity. Polysaccharides, especially β-d-glucans, are thought to be the main cancer-fighting and immune-boosting elements. They have a protective effect against free radicals and reduce cell damage.

The fun doesn’t stop there.

Mushroom proteins contain all the essential amino acids and are especially rich in lysine and leucine. And to even further nourish your health with these mushrooms, you will be happy to know that they’re also full of minerals. The main minerals present in reishi mushrooms are phosphorus,  sulfur,  potassium,  calcium,  and magnesium.

We are in love with this mushroom.
