1. What are functional mushrooms?
Functional or medicinal mushrooms are specific groups of fungi containing bioactive compounds that have been shown to have health-enhancing effects in the body. Most of these mushrooms have a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Asia where Traditional Chinese Medicine has used mushrooms in preventative and therapeutic medicine for over 3000 years.
The beneficial properties of compounds produced by functional mushrooms continues to be corroborated by modern science. Medicinal mushrooms contain polysaccharides called beta-glucans. Beta-glucans have been shown to directly activate receptors in our small intestine and act as immunomodulators, meaning that these compounds interact with the immune system to regulate our immune response.
In addition to their capacity to regulate our immune system and serve as an adaptogen, they also have antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial (viral, bacterial, fungal, parasitic), anti-diabetic, anti-hypercholesterolemic, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective properties.
2. What's an adaptogen?
Adaptogens are fungi and plants that help the body resist stressors of all kinds, whether physical, chemical or biological. These herbs, roots or fungi have been used for centuries in Chinese and Ayurvedic healing traditions. Some can be brewed into teas, others taken as supplements or eaten as part of a meal.
Adaptogens help your body handle stress and are meant to bring us back to balance.
3. What does mushroom “extract” mean?
The compounds that give mushrooms their power (beta-glucans, triterpenes etc.) are hiding inside the tough cell walls of the mushroom. If you were to eat a mushroom on its own, you wouldn't benefit from all the mushroom goodness.
Extraction is a process that breaks down the cell walls of the mushroom using either hot water, alcohol, or both depending on the mushroom.
1. Are your products organic?
Yes, our mushrooms are organically cultivated and most of our herbs are too.
2. Are your products vegan?
3. Why is there alcohol in your tincture?
Alcohol is an excellent solvent for herbs and fungi, because it can extract the compounds and active ingredients that aren’t extracted through water alone, such as triterpenoids. It’s also the only edible solvent that can effectively extract the ingredients required to serve our extremely demanding standard of excellence.
Our alcohol-based tinctures are fast-acting, because alcohol can enter our bloodstream very quickly. Our tongue and cheeks contain lots of capillaries which quickly absorb the alcohol. When you spray our products under your tongue, it’s entering your bloodstream almost immediately to deliver the tincture’s potent properties.
